Mary Beth Stoltzfus

Cooking with Tradition, Patience, and Care

My name is Mary Beth Stoltzfus, and I am forty-two years old, though my life has never been measured much by numbers. I was born and raised in an Amish community in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where time moved with the rhythm of the land and the meals that brought us together each day.

Cooking was not something I chose, it was something I grew into, standing on a wooden stool beside my mother, learning by watching, listening, and doing.

In our home, food was a form of devotion. Every dish began with gratitude and ended with shared silence or quiet conversation around a long table. I cooked what the seasons allowed and what my hands could prepare. I learned early that good cooking comes from attention, feeling dough change beneath your palms, knowing by smell when a pot is ready, trusting instinct more than written recipes. Those lessons shaped not only how I cook, but how I live.

As I grew older, I carried my Amish upbringing with me while allowing myself small, thoughtful experiments in the kitchen. I never wanted to abandon tradition, only to understand it more deeply. Sometimes that meant trying a new herb in a familiar stew or adjusting a baking method to bring out more warmth and texture. I’ve had my share of failures, collapsed pies, bread that refused to rise, but each mistake taught me patience and humility.

Today, I cook for people who long for food that feels sincere and nourishing. My approach is simple and honest: respect your ingredients, work with care, and don’t rush what needs time. I believe the most memorable meals are not the fanciest ones, but the ones that make people feel welcome and at ease. Food, to me, is a way of gathering, of grounding ourselves in a busy world.

I still cook the way I was taught by hand, by heart, and with purpose. Every meal carries echoes of my childhood kitchens and the values I was raised with. If my story or my cooking encourages you to slow down, cook from scratch, or share a table with intention, then I feel grateful to have shared this part of my journey with you.
